English Language Arts Course Descriptions
Literature and Composition I
Literature & Composition I is the first course (required) in the sequence of secondary English language arts courses required for graduation. This course develops the integrated skill set that comprises the English language arts discipline to ensure that students are on track to be college and work ready. Literature & Composition I focuses on the interpretation, evaluation, construction, and design of texts across genres and modes in a variety of real-world, academic, and disciplinary contexts while sustaining and building mastery of language applications and discipline-specific practices. This course must utilize the 9-12 standards and 9th grade expectations of Georgia's K-12 English Language Arts (ELA) Standards.
Literature and Composition II
Literature and Composition II is the second course (required) in the sequence of secondary English language arts courses required for graduation.This course focuses on a study of literary genres; the student develops understanding that theme is what relates literature to life and that themes are recurring in the literary world. The students explore the effect of themes in regard to interpretation. The students will read across the curriculum to develop academic and personal interests in different subjects. While the focus is persuasive writing in tenth grade literature, the student will also demonstrate competency in a variety of writing genres: narrative, expository, and technical. The student will engage in research, timed writings, and the writing process. Instruction in language conventions will occur within the context of reading, writing, and speaking, rather than in isolation. The students demonstrate an understanding of listening, speaking, and viewing skills for a variety of purposes.
11th Grade Literature/American Literature
Focusing on a study of American literature, the student develops an understanding of chronological context and the relevance of period structures in American literature. The student develops an understanding of the ways the period of a work of literature affects its structure and how the chronology of a work of literature affects its meaning.
12th Grade Literature/British Literature
Focusing on a study of British Literature, the student develops an understanding of chronological context and the relevance of period structures in British literature. The student develops an understanding of the ways the period of a work of literature affects its structure and how the chronology of a work of literature affects its meaning.
Technical College Readiness English
TCRE is designed to meet the needs of students who have passed Ninth Grade Literature and Composition, have passed American Literature and Composition or are concurrently enrolled in American Literature and Composition while taking this course. Technical College Readiness English will emphasize reading comprehension, identifying main ideas, making inferences, and distinguishing between direct statements and supporting ideas. The course will emphasize sentence structure skills. This course will provide an opportunity for students to review reading and writing skills needed for success in Technical College.
ESOL English I
This course incorporates both the WIDA English Language Proficiency Standards and the GSE for English Language Arts. English 10 credit may be given for this course.
ESOL English II
This course incorporates both the WIDA English Language Proficiency Standards and the GSE for English Language Arts. English 12 credit may be given for this course.
